NAVA History
In the Winter 1966-67 issue of The Flag Bulletin,
a call went out to the vexillologists of the United
States and Canada, inviting them to a conference in June,
1967 in Boston, Massachusetts. The initiative was taken
by Whitney Smith, Director of the Flag Research Center of
Winchester, Massachusetts.
Some twenty leaders in all fields of vexillology voted
to establish the North American Vexillological Association
at this meeting. They invited all interested persons in
the United States and Canada to join NAVA and pursue work
in all aspects of vexillology. Professor Pierre Lux-Wurm
was elected the Acting President of NAVA. Whitney Smith
was elected Acting Secretary, and represent NAVA at the
Second International Congress of Vexillology held in Zurich,
Switzerland, when it became the first member applicant
in the International Federation of Vexillological Associations
(FIAV).
The first NAVA annual meeting was held at the Manhattanville
College of the Sacred Heart, Purchase, New York, in November,
1967. Twenty-two members attended and elected the first
official slate of officers.
(For a more complete memoir of this by Whitney Smith, see "
The Origins of NAVA," elsewhere on this site.)
